On Thursday Nov. 25, Guelph’s 10 Carden space for change will host an evening with two talented Canadians to share their outspoken voices through the art of song and the spoken word.
“It’s going to be fantastic,” said Katarina Vuckovic of 10 Carden. “Evalyn Parry and Tanya Davis both wow audiences whenever they perform, so it’s going to be a quite incredible, innovative, and almost provocative performance from both artists. We are very excited to have them here and excited to be able to share with the community their talent.”
Toronto based artist Evalyn Parry, with her creativity and charming voice will bring to Guelph her vision of personal and social change. An artist of many talents, her songs and spoken word art exhibit her views on topics such as feminine protection, the bottled water industry, and the Northwest Passage. Witty, innovative and soulful, her work is overlaid with political overtones, provoking the audience into thinking about these issues. She has produced three albums, written and produced five plays, and is currently working on a musical, which will be on stage in 2011. She has performed and won acclaim from coast to coast, and will be sharing her talent and passion Thursday evening in the name of social change.
The soulful voice of Tanya Davis carries with it a subtle kind of sorrow that touches the hearts of the audience. Her ability to weave beautiful messages into her song and poetry is consummate, producing an unforgettable acoustic experience that is sure to warm the hearts of those who listen. Hailing from Halifax, she has won critical acclaim since her debut in 2006. She is a two-time winner of the CBC National Poetry Face-off as well as the Canadian Winner of the 2008 Mountain Stage New Song contest, among other notable nominations.
The word is spreading about 10 Carden. It is a place for organizations, local groups and businesses to meet, pool resources, and collaborate; a space to incubate and implement new ideas for social change. Applying aspects from the successful Centre for Social Innovation in Toronto, 10 Carden provides a community hub where like-minded people can come together to achieve common goals to promote positive social change.
“We also hold our own workshops here and we launched our first series on a wide variety of topics, such as emotional intelligence, social media, facilitation, and a variety of other themes,” said Katarina. “When you get people together in one physical space, there’s a lot of potential in partnership and the cross-pollination of ideas and for relationship building strategies and tools. We feel that 10 Carden is a great fit for students, whatever program they’re in, it’s a really great opportunity to have another place in downtown Guelph to work together.”
The FUN Raiser is it’s being called, costs $10, a meager price when you consider the talent that will be present and the cause it goes to support. Doors open at 7pm at the organizations location of 10 Carden St, directly across from City Hall.
