Gift Guide: Adding a personal touch

Julia Higginson on January 26, 2012 with 0 Comments

I sent out a request on Twitter asking my followers to tell me the best and worst gifts they’d ever received to help me with my column this week. The best gifts included local art, a Tiffany bracelet, an iPhone and my roommate’s late nana’s bible. The worst was a used baseball glove in a Monopoly box… and the giver wanted the box back. What I took from the answers I received was that the best gifts are either expensive (usually from parents or significant others) or thoughtful and personal. This week I’m going to focus on gifts that mean something.

An affordable and thoughtful gift suitable for is a picture frame with a meaningful picture inside. One of my roommates moved out this past summer and left a frame with a picture of us on each of our desks. It was a touching gesture and I now keep the frame on my desk permanently! I gave two picture frames to my best friend from home as part of her Christmas gift this year and she loved it because she said she never had the time to print pictures herself.

If you want to buy your frames in Guelph I’d check out Pier 1 in the Stone Road Mall for a wide range of frames in the $20.00 price range. Other great places you can get to on the bus route include stores like Chapters and Michaels. You could also check out local vintage stores downtown for something unique and different!

My gifting suggestion this week is from urbanoutfitters.com for the University student on your list. The frame is called a “Picture Window” a long clear plastic sleeve that holds 28 4×6 photos. The cost is $16.00 and hangs easily on any wall. I like this framing idea because it’s unique and adds a décor element to the room without cluttering surfaces. This large collection of photos will suit any student’s style.

To complete the gift you have to fill the Picture Window with your own pictures. I’d suggest printing photos with a theme. It could be a trip you took together, all of your summer photos, or something else to bring the theme together. You can also think of their room and focus on what would look best on their wall. The Picture Window is an affordable gift that is thoughtful and adds that personal element to it that people will appreciate.
