Gryphons getting ready to win
Mark Gottheil on January 26, 2012 with 0 CommentsAfter a frustrating loss to the Toronto Ridgebacks, the Gryphons were determined not to have their weekend end in a pair of loses.
With a renewed sense of vigor and drive, the Guelph women’s hockey team took their frustration out on Queens, soundly beating the Gaels 4-0, the team that sits just below them in the OUA standings.
When asked about the game against UofT, interim head coach Carly Haggard replied that the team was obviously disappointed. Haggard added, however, that the loss also had a positive effect on the team.
“I think the loss on Friday made the team even hungrier on Saturday and it showed with such a dominating performance,” said Haggard.
With a secure spot in the standings at second place, it can be hard not to become overconfident. Considering the last time the Gryphons and Ridgebacks met, Guelph trounced them 8-1.
The loss on Friday Jan. 20 can be seen as a wake-up call, a loss that has seemed to make the team even better.
Guelph’s success so far has not been dictated by one player, but by the consistency and depth of the entire team on offence and defence.
“Jacalyn Sollis, Tamara Bell, and Erin Small, lead this team night in and night out with their consistent play,” said Haggard, giving credit to the team captains.
However, Haggard also brought to attention a player that has a more in-depth role, Brittney Crawford, who scored a pair of goals against Queens, tripling her total goal output on the entire season.
When asked if the team still has work to do to become a championship team, Haggard replied that there is always work to do, though her belief in the team’s winning ability is steadfast.
“We have 6 solid D and 4 solid lines” says Haggard, “I know that we are one of the best teams in OUA.”
The coach’s statement rings true, as their is only one team that is ahead of the Gryphons in the standings: Laurier, the Gryphons’ biggest rival.
The Golden Hawks have gone almost undefeated this entire season, except for one overtime loss that they experienced at the hands of the Gryphons.
The Gryphons have a rematch against UofT on Thursday Jan. 26 and Haggard has assured us that the team will be ready.
“We are back on the ice practicing every day until the game, so we will no doubt be ready for that game.”
This seems to be the attitude that will be carried on into the OUA championship.
